The Daddy Book
Research shows that early father-infant attachment and involvement has positive and long lasting effects for child development, regardless of what happens with the father’s relationship with the mother. This early involvement with a first child tends to carry over to subsequent births of children. Because most men are not socialized to be involved with infant care, our Father Involvement Team decided to try to provide each new father with a resource for active involvement with their infants.
The Daddy Book, developed by staff in the Dads Project in St. Cloud MN, was chosen as the resource to distribute to new dads. Covering child development during the first year of an infant’s life, the Daddy Book also give men ideas about toys to make, games to play, safety issues, and parenting tips for the first year of a child’s life.
Daddy Books are available free locally, and distributed through St Joseph’s Medical Center and a variety of social service and educational programs in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Special thanks to the Brainerd Kiwanis for supporting the printing of the booklets.
